Sociology is the scientific study of society and social behavior. A sociologist studies the social world and its broad, predictable patterns of group action and interaction. Thus, what we have learned in sociology enables individuals to evaluate the power of social forces associated with group membership along dimensions of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, money, power, and others. The sociologist studies the function and dysfunctions of society enhancing our understanding of conformity, crime, marriage, family, wealth and income, power and prestige, etc. Ultimately, understanding these forces empowers people to make more effective life choices.
