Detroit Drafts Verhagen in 4th Round

DETROIT DRAFTS VERHAGEN IN 4TH ROUND

The Detroit Tigers selected Vanderbilt University junior pitcher Drew Verhagen with their third pick in the Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

Detroit picked the former Navarro College pitcher in the fourth round with the No. 154 selection.

Several scouts project the 6-foot-6, 225-pound righthander as a reliever in the farm system rather than shift to the starting rotation.  Verhagen’s fastball sits at 95 mph, but hasn’t established any effective secondary pitches. Vanderbilt baseball coach Tim Corbin says that Verhagen throws a heavy ball with a quality breaking pitch.

Verhagen graduated from Heath High School in Rockwall and spent his freshman season at The University of Oklahoma, before transferring to Navarro and competing on Coach Whoa Dill’s 2011 NJCAA Juco World Series Championship team.

Verhagen was 6-3 with a 3.50 earned-run average in 69 1/3 innings this year for the Commodores, which went 35-28 and finished the season as the Raleigh Regional runner-up to North Carolina State.
