The Navarro Runnin’ Bulldogs showed they can indeed run and also shoot it a little bit in Thursday’s season opener.

Five Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by sophomore David Woodard’s 21 points as Navarro blew past Tomball College 103-78 at the K. and Ida Wolens Special Events Center.

Navarro used a 25-8 run in the first half to show its potential to the home crowd. Princeton Onwas, who scored 16 points, had a 3-pointer during the run, as did Woodard. Freshman Toney Foster also had a dunk and Tomball never recovered.

Woodard, back at Navarro after a stint at Volunteer State, made 3 of his 5 3-pointers. Freshman Jamar Goodwin had a spectacular first game with 15 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Terrance Syon had 10 points. And sophomore Harrison Hawkins had 12 points and a team-high seven steals.

Navarro played excellent defense, forcing 24 steals. Freshman Micah Cooper had four steals to go with four points. Starting point guard Jonathan Benn had four points, four assists and three steals.

Hill College transfer Justin Phillipe scored five points while freshman Duan Wright added seven points.

The Bulldogs made 8 of 28 of their 3-pointers, including 6 of 17 in the first half. Navarro shot 49 percent for the game.
