Stump Godfrey scored on an 11-yard scramble with 45 seconds remaining, ending a dramatic last-minute drive and lifting Navarro to a 30-23 win over Georgia Military College in the Heart of Texas Bowl on Saturday.

Godfrey, who was benched for a series earlier in the fourth quarter, drove the Bulldogs 76 yards starting at the 2:17 mark with Navarro trailing 23-22. Godfrey completed passes of 17, 12, 7 and 18 yards and then rambled in from the 11 to put the Navarro ahead. Godfrey drilled a pass to Jordan Jolly (9 catches, 77 yards) for the two-point conversion.

The win closed Navarro’s season at 10-2. Georgia Military finished 7-4.

Running back Tyler Middleton rushed for a game-high 119 yards on seven carries, scoring on runs of 64 and 46 yards, the latter to pull Navarro within a point at the 12:33 mark of the fourth quarter.

Navarro trailed 17-16 at halftime and 29:15 of the second half before Godfrey’s late heroics. Navarro Coach Brian Mayper benched Godfrey after he had come off the field upset late in the third quarter after throwing his only interception of the game.

Godfery re-entered on the following series and was crisp the remainder of the game, going 6 of 9 for 97 yards. He finished 18 of 30 for 171 yards and a 15-yard first-half score to Jolly.
