MESQUITE — The 14th-ranked Navarro Bulldogs scrambled late against Bossier Parish here Thursday, and secured a doubleheader sweep that enabled them to reach the 30-win mark for the season.
Navarro scored two runs with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday and rallied for a 5-4 second-game victory over the Cavaliers at Poteet High School’s baseball field. The thrilling finish came on the heels of a 6-1 first-game victory, highlighted by righthander Gage Curry’s 1-hitter with nine strikeouts.
In the nightcap , coach Whoa Dill’s Bulldogs (30-11 / 19-3) used Kevin Meredith’s one-out double to plate Grayson Lewis with the tying run. Moments later, Kaleb Goodell’s single delivered Meredith with the game-winner.
Blake Griffin, the fourth Navarro pitcher, got credit for the victory.
After being shut down on 1 hit through seven innings of the first game, BPCC touched Navarro for four first-inning runs and five hits in Game 2. But the Bulldogs got solid two-hit relief work the rest of the way from JD Hammer, Lukas Schiraldi and Griffin and gave their offense a chance to battle back into the game.
Navarro scored a second-inning run, two in the fifth — and the pair in the ninth manufactured by the lower third of the batting order for the walk-off win. The 9th inning rally occurred after NC failed to capitalize on a two-out rally in an 8th inning in which it loaded the bases.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader Saturday against North Central Texas College in Gainesville at 1 pm
