Basketball recruiting season for the 2013-14 season nears its conclusion as the signing class adds 6-foot-2 combo guard Trey Young from Houston Strake Jesuit High School.
Young averaged 14 points and led the District 19-5A Crusaders in three-point shooting, assists and steals during a 19-14 season. Young, who had committed to Alcorn State, is the latest of four highly regarded Houston-area prospects from the Class of 2013 to join coach Johnny Estelle’s program.
The other 3 players are ranked by one notable source among the Top 26 players graduating from Houston-area schools: 6-foot-4 Da’Shawn Robinson from Alief Elsik, 6-foot-5 Khory Ross from Brazosport, and 6-foot-7 Rodrick Trimont from Houston Westside High School.
One recruiting service rates Robinson as Houston’s No. 7 prospect. Ross, a three-year starter and first-team TABC All-Stater, scored 1,475 points during his three-year varsity career. He averaged 15.1 points, 6.6 rebounds for Brazosport and scored in double figures in 61 of his final 67 high school games. Trimont earned District 20-5A MVP honors as a senior, following up a junior season in which he averaged 15 points and 5 rebounds for a 28-6 team.
Two more recent signings include 6-foot-10 Neville Fincher, a Teaneck, NJ., native, and 6-foot-7 sophomore transfer Troy Jones.
Fincher averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds at Hargrave Military Academy last season. The 220-pounder was recruited heavily by Marshall, Seton Hall, Western Kentucky, Towson and Houston before signing with Kansas State University, but he was unable to qualify academically.
Jones, from Alexandria, La., transfers to Navarro from Connors State in Warner, Ok. Jones averaged 5 points and 4 rebounds during limited play at Connors after starring four seasons at Peabody High School. Jones averaged 18 points and 13 rebounds during his senior season when he led his team to a second state title in four seasons. The first-team all-stater earned all-star MVP during a 23-point, 8-rebound, 3-steal performance at Natchitoches. Here, Jones will be reunited with his old Peabody teammate, Duan Wright.
Other top freshman recruits include sharpshooting Killeen Ellison guard Malik Hawkins (15/5/2); 5-foot-10 point guard Kris Boleware, a four-year starter from Arlington Seguin; 6-foot-6 forward Nyheem Atkins of Brooklyn, NY., and 6-foot-8 Anthony ‘Big Ant” Walker (12/8), who played at West Mesquite High School under former Corsicana High School coach Todd Brewer.
Five sophomores — Wright, third-team all-Region 14 performer Toney Foster, Jamar Goodwin, Shannon Lilly and 6-foot-10 Jaleel Cousins — will be back in the fold.
