Bulldogs escape from Hill, 86-83

HILLSBORO — Toney Foster’s 24 points led four Bulldogs in double-figure scoring as Navarro withstood foul problems and fended Hill, 86-83, in a non-conference men’s basketball game played Tuesday at The Bob Bullock Sports Center.

Foster’s season-high 24 points came from 11-of-17 shooting as coach Michael Landers’ Bulldogs won their second straight game.  The 6-foot-3 sophomore also grabbed three rebounds, handed out three assists, made two steals and blocked one shot.

Freshman Rodrick Trimont poured in 18 points from 6-of-9 shooting. The 6-foot-6 Houston Westside product grabbed four boards, dished out three assists and made a steal for the Bulldogs.

Freshman DaShawn Robinson overcame first-half foul trouble and finished with 15 points from 6-of-7 shooting from the floor.  Robinson made a spectacular off-balance shot driving baseline through traffic inside the final minute that kept the Bulldogs in the lead.

Sophomore Jaleel Cousins battled through foul difficulties as well and finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.  Cousins sat with four fouls at the 8:28 mark, but returned to the floor at 3:54 and contributed six points that broke a 70-70 tie and re-established Navarro’s lead.

After a dead-even battle for the first 16 minutes, Navarro used Foster’s hot hand to open a 42-35 halftime lead.  The Bulldogs opened it up as much as 10 points in the final half.

Coach Swede Trenkle’s Rebels suffered their first loss of the year after victories over Panola and Southern-Shreveport in last weekend’s McLennan Tipoff Classic at Waco.

The Rebels got a game-high 28 points from 6-foot-6 sophomore Xavier Habersham, 16 from Jared Johnson and 12 from Michael Chandler.  Habersham scored Hill’s first 8 points of the game.  First-team all-Region V guard Tramique Sutherland had been averaging 22 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists in the Rebels’ first games, but was limited to 10 Tuesday.

The Navarro-Hill matchup Tuesday is the first of three non-conference meetings scheduled in November.  The teams will face off in the Lewis Orr Classic here next week, and then oppose one another at the Angelina/Guy Davis Classic during Thanksgiving holidays in Lufkin.
