Bulldogs take opener, 63-57

Sophomore Jamar Goodwin scored a team-high 16 points and led three Bulldogs in double-figure scoring as Navarro opened Region XIV Conference play Tuesday with a 63-57 decision over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Coach Michael Landers’ Bulldogs (6-3 / 1-0) used three-point baskets over Jacksonville’s zone defense, plus a 22-of-36 night at the foul line to their advantage as they secured their second straight win and improved their home record to 5-1.

In earning his first team-high scoring honor of the season, Goodwin hit 3-of-7 from three-point range.

Duan Wright added 13 points, which included 9-of-14 shooting from the foul line. Twelve of Wright’s points came during the second half.

Toney Foster supplied 12 points .

Jaleel Cousins sccored eight points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, including six in the second half.

The teams combined to attempt 67 free throws in the game.

Navarro resumes play Friday in the Angelina/Guy Davis Classic at Shands Gymnasium in Lufkin.  The Bulldogs will play Hill’s Rebels for a third time this season in the 3 pm Friday game.  On Saturday at 5 pm, NC will face the Ranger Rangers.
