NC’s fast start keys 79-74 win

BEEVILLE — Toney Foster scored a team-high 16 points as the Navarro Bulldogs scored a 79-74 Region XIV men’s basketball victory over the Coastal Bend Cougars Wednesday night.

The win improved Navarro’s record to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in league play, with only a non-conference game Friday at Tomball against the Lone Star-Tomball Timberwolves remaining on the fall-semester schedule.

Navarro scored the game’s first 11 points Wednesday and opened its lead up as much as 17 points over the Cougars (6-4 / 0-3).  The Bulldogs led at halftime, 47-36.

Elsewhere in Region XIV action Wednesday, five of the six games played were settled by six points or less.

Lamar State-Port Arthur 76, Paris 70 –  The Seahawks trailed the entire game until the final two minutes.  Sophomore Tre Bennett, who finished with 26 points, scored 24 during the second half of play, including 14 straight during a 19-3 run inside the final 4:30.  LSC-PA took its first lead with 2:00 to go.

Lee 94, Tyler 91 – Sophomore Trahson Burrell scored a game-high 39 points from 10-of-17 shooting from the floor and 14-of-17 from the foul line to spark the Rebels’ road win.  Tyler got 23 points from Dominique Shaw.

Kilgore 88, Blinn 83 (OT) – Sophomore Stefan Moody scored a game-high 35 points and scored 8 overtime points during a 24-point second half as unbeaten, third-ranked Kilgore fought off Blinn at Brenham.  Jamarcus Weatherspoon had only one first-half bucket, but finished with 25 points.

San Jacinto 97, Bossier Parish 70 – The Ravens went on a 19-0 run during the second half to blow out Bossier Parish.  Carrington Ward’s 17 points led four Ravens in double-figure scoring.
