COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo — Sophomore running back Tim Wright , Navarro’s career and single-season rushing recordholder, was selected Monday as a member of the NJCAA second-team All-America squad.
Wright capped a sensational 2013 season with 35-249-4 MVP Performance in the Bulldogs’ 34-27 Brazos Valley Bowl win over Hinds CC, Ms., in the process of rewriting all Navarro single-season rushing records. He led the Bulldogs to a 9-3 record and the No. 12 ranking in the final NJCAA Poll.
Wright’s single-season carries total of 275 broke by 34 the previous mark established by Darold Turner in 1977. His 1812 yards broke by 512 yards a mark established by Norman Nunn in 1983, and the 26 rushing touchdowns broke by 6 the previous best set by Charles ‘Rock’ Thompson in the 1989 national championship season.
The 5-11, 195-pound Lamarque sophomore finished his two-year career with 335-2182-26. Wright tied Terrell Washington for third place on the all-time carries list behin leader Depauldrick Garrett (348) and Kelvin Russell (342). Wright’s 2182 yards bettered by 247 the two-year rushing mark set by Russell (1976-77), and the 26 rushing touchdowns broke Luther Turner’s 1983-84 mark of 22 scores.
Wright, the Southwest Junior College Football Conference Offensive MVP, was the only Navarro player selected to the NJCAA All-American squad.
Three sophomore members of coach Brad Smiley’s SWJCFC Champion Trinity Valley Cardinals were named to the NJCAA first-team defense: lineman Jhaustin Thomas (6-6, 275), linebacker Josh Pickett (5-9, 215) and defensive back D’Nerius Antoine (6-1, 205). Blinn sophomore defensive back Ken Butler (5-11, 200) also claimed first-team honors.
Joining Wright among the second-team All-Americans were offensive linemen Gerron Anthony (6-4, 315) of Kilgore and Connor Groom (6-2, 280) of Tyler.
