Free throws help NC close out Apaches, 69-68

Sophomores Jamar Goodwin and Shannon Lilly each pitched in 13 points and Navarro’s 27-of-35 free-throw shooting was a difference maker in the Bulldogs’ 69-68 Region XIV men’s basketball victory Saturday over the Tyler Apaches.

Coach Michael Landers’ Bulldogs (15-8 / 8-4) had to overcome 34 percent shooting from the field against TJC, and rallied from as much as a seven-point deficit to win.

At one late stage, NC was 24-of-27 from the foul line. The Bulldogs managed to get some necessary final-minute free throws from Lilly, Cris Boleware, Toney Foster and Troy Jones to subdue TJC.

Down 24-16 during the first half, it was Lilly who gave Navarro a spark with eight unanswered points that included a pair of three-pointers and brought NC into a tie.

Tyler, playing without freshman Dominique Shaw, got 26 points from guard Todd Eaglin, 11 from Tyler Moore and 9 from Vamba Donzo’s perimeter shooting.  The Apaches (11-9 / 4-8) lost for their seventh time in their last 10 games and fell to 1-5 in games decided by two possessions.

With 14:29 left, Navarro went on an unanswered run of nine points to erase a 44-38 Apache lead.  TJC’s last lead occurred at 8:05 (51-49), when Boleware sank a pair of free throws.  Goodwin hit two go-ahead free shots on the next trip, and Neville Fincher cashed a Toney Foster steal and assist into points for a lead NC never relinquished.

Goodwin’s 6 rebounds shared team-high honors with Troy Jones, who battled for 12 points despite a subpar 4-for-15 shooting performance inside.  Foster came off the bench to score all 10 of his points during the second half and came up big in the critical five minutes.
