Navarro’s softball team (13-8) plays non-conference doubleheaders Monday at Hillsboro against Hill College, and Wednesday at UT-Arlington against 10th-ranked Odessa College.
Hill lost its first 14 games of the season. Meanwhile, Odessa will bring an 11-3 record and 9-game winning streak to Arlington for the neutral-field matchup with the 13th-ranked Bulldogs.
Odessa’s resume includes wins over Eastern Oklahoma (14-3), Trinidad State, Col., (10-2), and 17th-ranked North Central Texas College (7-4) at the Midland Invitational on February 14. The Lady Wranglers are coming off a 46-21 season.
Most recently, they’ve run-ruled Western Nebraska (10-2 in 5) and beaten Coastal Bend, 7-1. Odessa will make a Wednesday stopover in Arlington since it is on its way to Columbus, Ga., this weekend for games against 20th-ranked Spartanburg Methodist, S.C., and Gordon College, Ga.
Navarro will have to cope with a Wrangler lineup that likely will include Palmdale, Cal., sophomore second baseman Sammie Murrieta, who was named NJCAA D-I Player of the Week (Feb 10-16). Murrietta batted .600 (15-for-25) with two doubles, two triples, 2 home runs, 11 RBI and 10 stolen bases
The Bulldogs are coming off 3-1 weekend at the 16th Temple Invitational Tournament, where they defeated Iowa Western (2-0), Alvin (8-5) and Galveston (7-2) before dropping a 5-3 decision to third-ranked Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
