LUFKIN – East Zone Champion Navarro, led by freshman MVP Ciara Luna, placed six members in some capacity on the 2014 All-Region XIV Softball Team, while Jessica Karenke and Courtney Anderson were selected as the league’s top coaches.
The All-Region XIV Softball team was unveiled Thursday after first-day play of the league’s annual double-elimination tournament.
Two sophomores and two freshmen from the 14th-ranked Bulldogs earned first-team recognition. Sophomore catcher Megan Noel of Cleveland (3-23-2, .323) and shortstop Monique Miller (0-11-32, .450) joined freshman outfielder Destiny Kennedy of Splendora (1-26-14, .390) and pitcher Ciara Luna of Seguin (19-6, 1.12, 2 saves) earned first-team votes from the league coaches.
Luna’s Region MVP honor is a rare designation for a freshman.
Sophomore third baseman Kristen Ahearn of Allen (7-48-12, .372) and freshman outfielder Caitlin Moerbe of Humble (0-6-24, .406) were voted as second-team members.
Karenke and Anderson guided the Navarro club to a 35-13 regular-season record and NJCAA ranking. The Bulldogs finished the regular-season with a flurry by winning 17 of their final 20 regular season games, punctuated by a 12-game winning streak. The Bulldogs also were unbeaten in six games at the Creek Indian JC Classic in Alabama, including a win over 2013 NJCAA Champion Wallace State-Hanceville.
