3 ex-Bulldogs get undrafted free-agent offers

By MIKE MONTFORT  –

With the conclusion of the NFL Draft Saturday, pro clubs and undrafted free agents began a frenzied chase to find one another.

At least three former Navarro Bulldog football players said Saturday night they already had received offers from professional clubs.

Defensive linemen Calvin Barnett of Oklahoma State, Tevin Mims of the University of South Florida and Christo Lisika of Southern Nazarene University confirmed post-draft negotiations.

Barnett, a 6-foot-2, 289-pounder, and Lisika, a 6-foot, 238-pound linebacker, each received offers from the Cleveland Browns; Mims, a 6-foot-3, 246-pounder, got one from the Miami Dolphins.

Barnett was named 1st team All-Big 12 by league coaches and by The Associated Press in 2013 after 32 tackles, 18 solos and 9 tackles for losses (TFL).  The former second-team NJCAA All-American played here when the Bulldogs went 21-3, won an NJCAA Championship in 2010, and finished fifth nationally in 2011. For his two-year career here, Barnett had 51 tackles, 24 solos, 7 TFL and 3 fumble recoveries.

Mims was South Florida’s Defensive MVP in 2013 with 40 tackles, 6 TFL, and 1.5 sacks in eight starts before suffering an ankle injury.  In his USF career of 19 starts, Mims had 75 tackles, 9.5 TFL and 3.5 sacks.  He had a personal season-high 7 stops against Michigan State.

Mims originally signed with Texas, transferred to Navarro and helped the 10-2 ‘Dogs win the 2011 SWJCFC title with 19 tackles, 4 sacks and 7 TFL.

Lisika had a noteworthy effort during a pro-day performance in Tulsa that may have influenced scouts.

The former Euless-Trinity product ran the 40 in 4.70 and 4.75 seconds, and had a 36-inch vertical jump. Lisika is an interesting prospect that some NFL team will bring in as a special-teams hopeful. He’s built really well and is a tough, aggressive player.

Lisika, an immigrant from the Democratic Republic of The Congo, played last season for a winless SNU Crimson Storm team, but established himself as a dominant defensive end with 4.5 sacks and 17.5 TFLs.
