Volleyball opens with 2 matches at TJC’s Hatch Invitational

TYLER — Coach Kasey McBrearty’s Navarro Bulldog volleyball team opens its 2014 fall season Friday, Aug. 22 when its competes in the two-day Dana Hatch Invitational at Tyler Junior College.

A total of 12 volleyball teams — half of them ranked in the NJCAA Division I Preseason Poll — will be battling in pool play at TJC Friday and Saturday.

Pool 1 play will be at Wagstaff Gymnaium and Pools 2 and 3 will be next door at Gentry Gym in the Ornelas Health and Physical Education Center..

Matches Friday are scheduled at 10 am, noon, 2 pm and 4 pm.

According to the schedule posted at Apacheathletics.com, Navarro will compete in Pool 3 on Friday, with matches scheduled at noon against 20th-ranked Temple from Region V and at 4 pm against Cedar Valley College.

In Pool 3 play on Saturday, the Bulldogs square off with Western Texas at 1 pm and North Central Texas College at 3 pm.

The Hatch Invitational field includes 2013 NJCAA champion Blinn, runner-up Tyler and 12th-rated Missouri State University-West Plains — all of which advanced to last year’s national tournament.  In addition to Temple, teams from 24th-ranked Panola and 25th-rated Colby CC, Ks., are entered in the meet.

On Friday, Navarro will face a Temple squad that picked to finish second in its District F competition this season.  On Saturday, the Bulldogs will face a Western Texas club that’s picked to finish third in District E and a North Central Texas team that picked to claim fourth in District F.
