CISCO — The second-ranked Navarro Bulldogs’ soccer team made a successful 2014 season debut Saturday by shutting out the host Wranglers 5-0 at Chesley Field, and began its crusade to tame the Wild West.
Coach Debbie Bonner’s club got goal-scoring Saturday from five different sources: Amanda Olson, Trudi Carter, Shelby Evans, Melina Prado and Shanise Foster. Goals by Prado and Foster gave Navarro a 2-0 halftime lead.
Navarro travels next weekend to Cheyenne, Wy., to face third-ranked Butler CC, Ks., on Saturday, and fourth-ranked host Laramie County CC on Sunday. All three teams qualified for the 2013 NJCAA Tournament Semifinals at Melbourne, Fla., in November, and rank 2-3-4 nationally to start the 2014 campaign.
For LCCC, the match-ups will be the first of the regular season. Coach Jim Gardner’s Golden Eagles have qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament five of the last 10 seasons. The seven-time Region IX Champions finished 18-2-3 last year and placed third nationally behind Iowa Western and Navarro.
Butler (0-2) suffered season-opening losses last weekend to defending champion Iowa Western (4-1) and regarded Otero CC, Col., (2-1) in a tournament at Council Bluffs, Ia. Coach Adam Hunter’s Region VI champion Grizzlies went 21-3-2 before losing to Navarro in an overtime thriller at Melbourne.
