Soccer makes return trip to NJCAA Tournament

TONKAWA, Ok — It’s Back-2-Back-2-Florida!

District I and Region XIV champion Navarro advanced to the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Tournament with a 3-0 win Sunday over the Region II runner-up Eastern Oklahoma State Mountaineers.

Coach Debbie Bonner’s fifth-ranked Bulldogs (14-4-1) won their eighth straight match and recorded their sixth shutout during the streak.  Sophomore All-American Trudi Carter scored a hat trick and the Bulldogs dominated play all afternoon in the EOSC end of the field.

One might say Navarro is riding a high wave as it prepares now for a return to the NJCAA Tournament set at Melbourne, Fla., Soccer Complex on the Eastern Florida State campus November 17-22.

Navarro advances to its 7th NJCAA Tournament since 2004.  The Bulldogs went five consecutive seasons (2004-08) and now have strung together two more in consecutive years. They were 19-4-1 national finalists last year.

More in the area of increasing numbers for the program: NC now also has 7 NJCAA District titles to go along with 8 Region XIV Championships. The counting never  gets old.

The 12-team field for Melbourne is set.

They will be seeded and placed into four, three-team pools. Pool matches will be played at 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, and 7 pm (EST) Monday through Wednesday. From pool play, pool winners will advance.

Of the dozen district-champion qualifiers, 10 were ranked in the latest NJCAA D-I Poll Wednesday, Nov. 5,  and 7 of the teams are returning qualifiers.

Qualifiers with Navarro include Pima College, Az., Butler CC, Ks., St. Charles, Mo.; Monroe College, NY; Waubonsee, Ill.; Owens CC, Ohio; Darton College, Ga.; Harford CC, Md.; Otero JC, Col.; 2013 champion Iowa Western and host Eastern Florida State College.

The teams most recently ranked by the NJCAA: 1) Iowa Western, 2) Monroe; 3) Eastern Florida State; 4) Otero; 5) Navarro; 10-Tie) Pima and Darton; 13) Butler; 16) St. Charles; and 19) Harford.

Returning from the 2013 qualifiers are 7 of the Top 10 seeds from that tournament. Along with the Bulldogs are defending champion Iowa Western, Monroe, Eastern Florida State, Darton, Butler and Owens.
