7th-ranked TVCC pushes past Navarro, 77-62

Dedrick Basile’s 18 points led four Cardinals in double-figure scoring as 7th ranked Trinity Valley downed the Navarro Bulldogs, 77-62, in a Region XIV East Zone game Wednesday night.

Coach Kris Baumann’s Cardinals won their 12th straight game, improved to 25-3 overall and 15-2 in league play.  The win enabled TVCC to widen its East Zone lead over second-place Navarro to 3 1/2 games.

Aldonis Foote added 17 for TVCC, which opened upa 47-32 lead at halftime as the Cardinals used unanswered runs of 12 points, and of 9 points to seize a lead they never relinquished.

Clarence Williams and Sheldon Hagigal scored 10 points apiece for TVCC, which held as much as a 19-point lead during the second half.

Navarro appeared to survive the Cardinals’ first run of 12 points by pulling within two (18-16), but TVCC went another scoring spree that the Bulldogs couldn’t combat.

NC shot only 33% (19-of-57) from the floor and 35% (6-of-17) from the arc. Additionally, the ‘Dogs only cleared 22 rebounds during the game against the taller, deeper TVCC front.  The Bulldogs mostly got one-shot possessions, but they also missed some seemingly easy scoring opportunities underneath.

DaShawn Robinson (15) and Wayne Martin (14) led three Bulldogs in double-figure scoring.

Robinson hit on 5-of-14 shots from the floor, cleared three rebounds and stole two passes.  Martin’s 15 came primarily from 9-of-13 foul shooting, and the 6-7 Brooklyn, N.Y., sophomore only was able to pull down three boards.

Trey Young, too, experienced difficulties.  The Houston sophomore totaled 9 points from 3-of-12 shooting, but managed to lead NC individual rebounders with 4.  Young missed his first five shots and endured a scoreless first half.

Cris Boleware pitched in 13 points, 10 during the first half.  Boleware hit half of Navarro’s three-point shots and finished 4-of-10 from the floor. He dished out five assists and also grabbed three defensive rebounds.

At halftime, Navarro College recognized members of coach Don Newton’s District 16-5A champion Corsicana Tiger basketball team. CHS (26-5/10-2) won its first district basketball title in 30 years and will advance to post-season play.

The Bulldogs next play at 4 pm Saturday at Paris against the Dragons in The Hunt Center.
