All-Region XIV soccer squad includes 6 Bulldogs

By MIKE MONTFORT    —

Six freshman members of coach Alicia Wilson’s Bulldogs were named in some capacity to the All-Region XIV Women’s Soccer team.

Three players were selected by the league’s coaches to the 11-member first team:  forwards Deneisha Blackwood and Aaliyah Nolan and defender Victoria Swift.

The league’s nine-player, honorable-mention cast included Navarro’s Shantell Thompson, Tiffany Robinson and goalkeeper Kaitlyn Baugh.

Blackwood leads the team in points (33), has scored a team-high 13 goals and dished out 7 assists for the 11-5-1 Bulldogs this season.

She had a hat trick during Navarro’s 4-0 win at Richland on August 31, and also had four two-goal games. Blackwood scored both goals here in a 2-0 victory over Paris.  She also had two-goal games in wins on the road against Illinois Central (5-0), Northeast (6-1) and Jacksonville (10-1).

Much of her good fortune in the team concept has come from Nolan, Thompson and Aileen Lira, who all share the team lead with 7 assists.

Nolan, in only nine games, has 23 points from eight goals and seven assists.  Despite missing seven matches in September, she managed to record a hat trick in the Bulldogs’ 10-1 win at Jacksonville on October 10.  That effort followed a 3-assist game in a 6-1 NC win over Northeast Texas at Mount Pleasant four days earlier.

Swift has 12 points from five goals and two assists.  She converted a decisive penalty kick here in a 2-1 win over Northeast during the regular season.

Thompson matches Nolan’s point total (23) in her 17 starts this season.

Robinson, another defender,  has 13 points from five goals and three assists. She scored both goals in the home-season opening 3-2 loss to Laramie County.

Baugh carries a 10-4-1 record with seven shutouts in goal for NC.  She’s made a region-high 77 saves and has a save percentage of almost 79 percent. She made a personal-season high 11 saves as Navarro clinched the Region XIV runner-up slot with a 3-2 semifinal win over Northeast, and stopped 10 Butler shots during a 2-1 win at Tyler on September 6.
