Unbeaten McLennan scored a 79-68 win Friday over the Navarro Bulldogs in the feature game of The Lewis Orr Classic.
Coach Kevin Gill’s Highlanders got 29 points from Shannon Bogues and 19 from Aundre Jackson as they won their eighth straight game.
Navarro’s Jamar Martin got a personal-high 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting, seven rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot in the game.
Sophomore Keir Anderson pitched in 14 points (including 4 three-point baskets). He also dished out a team-high five assists — 3 coming in the first four minutes when NC led, 10-7.
Tyler Whitehead added 13 points, five rebounds and two assists in his second start of the classic and the season. Four of Whitehead’s five rebounds were offensive.
The teams were tied three times — the last coming at 12:20 of the first half (15-15). The Bulldogs went cold for a 10-minute stretch and hit only three baskets.
MCC took advantage of Navarro’s woes and blitzed the Bulldogs with a 14-2 run that they never could overcome.
The Highlanders led at halftime, 44-28, and eventually extended their margin to 20 (59-39). To the Bulldogs’ credit, they fought back within eight points on three occasions, but Bogues always had a counteracting response to stem rallies and prevent Navarro’s momentum from growing.
Navarro shot only 32 percent from the floor (24-of-74), despite matching MCC’s 10 three-point buckets.
The Bulldogs slipped to 2-5 with a 7 pm Wednesday game scheduled against the Paul Quinn College JV here. Wednesday’s contest will be the final one before Region XIV Conference play begins here at 4 pm Saturday when the San Jacinto Ravens call.
