JACKSONVILLE — Sophomore Tyler Whitehead hit a personal-season high 25 points and Jamar Martin produced his fourth double-double this month as the Navarro Bulldogs edged Jacksonville 90-89 Tuesday at Curtis Carroll Fieldhouse.
Navarro won its third straight game, its second Region XIV Conference crossover, and its first league contest on the road. The Bulldogs also snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Jaguars, who were one of four unbeaten Texas Junior College basketball teams heading into play Tuesday.
Whitehead’s 25 came from 6-of-9 shooting, and included 13-of-16 free throws. The 6-foot-4, Brooklyn, NY, sophomore transfer from Midland also added two rebounds and three steals.
Martin sank 16 points and cleared a team-high 12 rebounds to record his fourth double-double of the season. He’s also had double-doubles against ProVision, the Texas Riders and Temple this season. His 12-rebound game was a personal- and team-high for the year, coming off a persona-l and team-high 26-point, 6-steal effort against San Jacinto.
Sophomore transfer guard Conrad Chambers responded with 10 points, four rebounds and five assists for the Bulldogs, which had a 40-32 lead at halftime.
Keir and Calvin Anderson each netted eight points. Jalen Jackson added six points from 3-of-4 shooting. Before fouling out, Eric McCullom contributed six points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.
Navarro hit a season-low 3-of-19 from three-point range, but compensated inside the arc where they hit 57% (26-of-45). Led by Whitehead’s 13-of-16, Navarro availed itself of 29-of-40 free-throw opportunities (72.5%).
The Bulldogs trailed 74-71 with 4:32 left, but rallied for an 85-81 lead that they never relinquished.
Coach Michael Landers’ Bulldogs play a non-conference game Saturday at 4 pm at Terrell against the Southwestern Christian Rams.
