Bulldogs work OT to beat Blinn, sweep South Zone

BRENHAM — Jamar Martin recorded his fifth double-double of the season with a team-high 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks as Navarro used overtime to defeat the Blinn Buccaneers, 91-85, Saturday.

Coach Michael Landers’ Bulldogs (11-6/7-0) won their sixth straight game, ninth in their last 10 and completed a sweep of Region XIV South opponents during the league’s crossover period.

Navarro also got double-figure scoring from four other sources Saturday: 18 from Keir Anderson and 11 each from Tyler Whitehead, Neek Mukoro and Eric McCullom.

The Bulldogs overcame a miserable start when they fell behind 17-0.  Navarro finally responded with a 23-4 run to realize its first lead of the game (23-21), and went on to assume a 38-32 halftime advantage.

Blinn, behind 29 points from Morris Dunnigan, battled back to achieve a tie at 57 with 9:36 left.  From that point, the Buccaneers went on a 9-2 run and opened up a 66-57 lead with just over seven minutes remaining.

Navarro created a 74-74 tie with 0:18.7 left, but BC could not convert on its final possession of regulation.

NC quickly opened up a five-point overtime lead and withstood challenges from the Buccaneers and John Dewey, who was the team’s leading scorer in the extra period.

In winning their first overtime game of the season, Navarro improved to 5-1 in two-possession games.  Coincidentally, all five NC wins have occurred against South Zone teams during the crossover.

Saint Hilaire added nine points, nine rebounds and five assists for NC.

Navarro resumes Region XIV conference play Wednesday when it returns to the Wolens Special Events Center for a 7 pm game against the Tyler Apaches.
