Samples to join TCL’s Brazos Valley Bombers

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Brazos Valley Bombers will add Navarro College third baseman Alex Samples among six infielders to help strengthen their Texas Collegiate League roster for the 2016 season.

Samples earned All-Region 14 and first-team All-Eastern Conference honors during Navarro’s 39-16 season. The Bridgeport, Tx., sophomore led Navarro to NJCAA ranking as high as No. 13 during the regular season. He appeared in 53 games, hitting team-highs of 11 home runs and 60 RBIs. Samples also led the Bulldogs in hits (79), doubles (18), triples (3) and runs scored (60), while hitting .395.

Samples left a two-year imprint at Navarro with inclusion among team statistic leaders in 6 career and 5 single-season categories.

The Brazos Valley Bombers also are pulling from a variety of colleges across the states. Jake Baxter, Zach McGuire, Logan Bottrell, Ryan Olenek, Ivan Estrella will be joining the Bombers in the 2016 season.

Baxter strengthens the Bombers 2016 baseball roster with his versatile player abilities as both a pitcher and a hitter. At Oklahoma Christian University, Baxter had a successful sophomore season as a pitcher with 10 starts out of his 11 appearances and pitched 5 complete games. He obtained 33 strikeouts in 68 2/3 innings. As a hitter, Baxter earned a .220 batting average with 2 home runs as well as bringing in 5 RBI’s.

McGuire is a sophomore from Michigan State University. In 2015, McGuire appeared in 20 games making 10 starts as a designated hitter. He finished his 2015 season at Michigan State with a batting average of .244 consisting of 2 doubles and 8 RBI’s.

Bottrell, a freshman second baseman, is from Cochise College in Arizona.  Bottrell is joining the Bombers after gaining an RBI of 25 after 54 game appearances this past season at Cochise. He holds a batting average of .314.

Olenek is a freshman from Ole Miss. During his freshman year at Ole Miss he obtained an RBI of 26 along with a batting average of .274. Olenek defended his successful high school baseball career after being named the 13th best shortstop in Florida by Perfect Game and being awarded the 2015 Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American Florida Region award. Olenek also proved his pitching skills his senior year after pitching 44 strikeouts in 43 innings over a span of 9 appearances.

Estrella is a sophomore from Pima Community College located in Tucson, Arizona. Estrella has currently appeared in 56 games achieving a batting average of .296. Throughout the season he has successfully stole five bases and obtained an RBI of 24.

The Bombers are set to take the field on May 27th to begin their “Road to Four” at home against the Acadiana Cane Cutters.
