FB16 - Blinn 5

Arthur, NC use big 3rd period to subdue Buccaneers, 54-38

By ROB LUDWIG / Corsicana Sun   —

After the lead changed  four times in the first half, Navarro went on a 20-point scoring binge in the third period en route to a 54-38 victory over Blinn on Saturday at Tiger Stadium.

FB16 - Blinn 7The victory sends Navarro into its off week with a 2-1 overall record and evened its Southwest Junior College Football Conference at 1-1. Blinn is also 2-1 and 1-1.

Navarro’s win may have come at a hefty price. Starting quarterback Devlin Isadore exited the game on the next-to-last play of the first period with a knee injury after he was sacked.

Backup Kenny Arthur looked wobbly initially, throwing an interception on his first play in Isadore’s relief. But the redshirt sophomore rebounded to complete 18 of 27 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns as Navarro outgained Blinn, 568-400.

Arthur was the triggerman in the third-point outburst. Arthur toss scoring passes of 51 pass to Keshawn Henderson and 20 yards to Dante Ellis-Thomas to put the game out of reach. Backup running back DeAndre Cook added a 6-yard scoring jaunt for Navarro’s other score of the second half.

FB16 - Blinn 9UCLA transfer Aaron Sharp at times lived up to his name, completing touchdown passes of 79, 68 and 73 yards to Earnest Patterson in the first half as the Bucs built a lead as big as 10 points. But Navarro’s secondary harassed the Blinn receiving corps throughout the game and limited Sharp and Caleb Hill to a combined 15-of-44 (34.1 percent) passing. Taking away the three big touchdown passes, Blinn averaged a meager 3.3 yards per pass attempt. Blinn also was limited to 31 yards rushing on 20 attempts.

Navarro ran 17 more plays and was more adept with its run game. Dual threats Maurice Gordon (13-83-1) and Xavier Turner (15-137-2) provided ample punch, with Turner scoring on first-half touchdown runs of 1 and 71 yards.

Adolfo Chavira added field goals of 25 and 37 yards in the final 6:08 of the first half, giving Navarro a 34-30 lead at the break.

Blinn was scoreless in the second half until 4:02 remained in the game after a botched punt snap gave the Bucs the ball at the Navarro 24. Blinn reach Navarro’s end of the field only one other time in the second half.
