Jones to play pro basketball in Saudi Arabian League

Former Navarro Bulldog and Texas A&M-Kingsville basketball player Troy Jones of Alexandria, La., will play professionally in the 12-team Saudi Premier League for Al Shrooq.

Jones originally had been committed to play in Spain, but backed out of the contract to accept the Saudi Arabian deal.

Jones averaged 12.9 points and 8.9 rebounds during his senior season for coach Johnny Estelle at TAMU-Kingsville. As a junior for the Javelinas, he averaged 11.6 points and 5.7 rebounds before an ankle fracture sidelined him.

The 6-foot-7 forward starred for Peabody Magnet School and led the Warhorses to state championships in 2010 and 2012.  One of seven senior players from Peabody’s Class of 2012 to earn a basketball scholarship, Jones also earned MVP honors at the LSHAA All-Star Game before he arrived at Navarro.

Jones is a known third Navarro player currently involved in overseas basketball. Former NC and Sam Houston Stater Demarcus Gatlin just completed his first season with the Geelong Supercats in Australia. Also, former Bulldog and University of New Orleans Privateer Kyndall Dykes (here, 2005-07) is under contract with UBT Cluj Napoca in Romania through 2017.
