TJC, Carter’s 6 TD passes spoil Navarro homecoming

McLane Carter threw for a single-game individual high 576 yards and six touchdowns Saturday as the 12th-ranked Tyler Apaches spoiled homecoming for 20th-rated Navarro, 58-29.

FB 16 - TJC8Four of Carter’s touchdown passes went to sophomore receiver Savon Rollison, who finished the game with 14 catches for 206 of his total 224 all-purpose yards.

Coach Danny Palmer’s Apaches bounced back from last week’s miserable 50-35 loss at home to Blinn and improved their overall record to 4-1 and SWJCFC ledger to  3-1.  The Apaches now share first place in the league with Trinity Valley and Kilgore, two games ahead of Navarro.

Coach Cody Crill’s Bulldogs suffered a stinging loss that dropped them to 3-3 overall and, more importantly, 1-3 in league play, with only three SWJCFC regular-season games remaining on their schedule.

FB 16 - TJC4The loss not only put into jeopardy Navarro’s string of SWJCFC playoff appearances, but overshadowed the work Saturday of sophomore quarterback Kenny Arthur, who set Navarro individual single-game records for completions (42) and attempts (70) in his first game action in three weeks.

Arthur, returning from foot surgery, passed for 447 yards despite limited mobility.  He threw touchdown passes of 43 to Andre Bonner and 4 to Dante Ellis-Thomas.

Two weeks ago at Miami, Ok., freshman Kyle Fuller became Navarro’s third starting quarterback of the season and re-set Bulldog single-game passing marks entering the 2016 season.  In his debut, Fuller completed 36-of-66 in a 51-46 loss to NEO A&M’s Golden Norsemen.

FB 16 - TJC6On Saturday, Arthur sprayed passes all over the field to seven different Bulldog targets, but Navarro had problems running the football.

NC scored twice on the ground, but managed only 22 yards on 31 rushing attempts.  Xavier Turner led the way with 58 yards (including a NC-best 16 yarder).  Maurice Gordon managed 14 yards on 8 attempts.  TJC’s defense kept pressure on Arthur and recorded nine sacks in the game.
