Upon Further Review: Notes from Navarro-Tyler

Before the game began, Tyler (619.5) and Navarro (573.2) were ranked 1-2 in yardage per game, based on latest NJCAA statistics. No wonder they combined for 87 points, 200 plays, 1217 yards offense, 1356 total yards, 84 completions 138 attempts, 13 punts and 14 penalties….Saturday’s combined 87 points closely followed an alarming recent trend when these teams meet.   The teams have scored 89 or more in 7 games since 1996, and 103 or more in 3 of the last 5 now. Navarro and Tyler met for the 82nd time Saturday.  The Bulldogs hold a 43-39 lead in their series and have won 11 of the last 15….Tyler sophomore Savon Rollison joined Blinn’s Ernest Patterson, Jr., as a second receiver to total more than 200 yards in a game against the Bulldogs this season….Rollison now leads the NJCAA in per-game reception yardage with 147.8 and ranks fourth in TD receptions with 11…..McLane Carter’s 576 passing yards from 40-of-64 is a single-game high against NC.  Blinn’s Jake Hubenak threw for 518 yards in 66-42 loss in 2014.  TJC’s Sederian Copeland also threw for 486 in a 69-55 win at Trinity Mother Frances-Rose Stadium last year….Carter, who originally signed with The University of Incarnate Word, is the brother of G.J. Kinne….Kinne played collegiately at Tulsa and bounced around the NFL with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles before playing in the Canadian Football League with Calgary and Saskatchewan….While averaging 40.7 points this season, the Bulldogs now are yielding 41.3….  FB 16 - TJC5Sophomore rushers Xavier Turner and Maurice Gordon have virtually identical numbers.  Together, they’ve combined for 1,046 yards — and outgained the team rushing total (1016)….8 Bulldog receivers have caught at least 10 passes this season, and 6 have 20 or more.  Sophomore transfer Andre Bonner’s 35 (for 511) leads the way.  Others are Dominique Harris (27-362-1), Dante Ellis-Thomas (24-403-7, Tim Taylor (24-245-1), Keshawn Henderson (21-289-1) and Maurice Gordon (20-193-3)….Bonner’s caught 12 passes in two of Navarro last three games….Ellis-Thomas has caught TD passes in all 6 Navarro contests….The Bulldogs were 10-of-23 in third-down conversions Saturday….Defensive Player of the Week honors went to Ty Thomas.  Other position awards went to David Orr (ILBs), Tavares Thomas (OLBs), Matthew Wright (DB) and Brian Brazil (TNT)….Wright, with 13 stops Saturday, widened his team tackle-lead to 15 over OLB Dee Spencer (79-64)….Tavares Thomas leads the team with 8 sacks and shares team leads in TFLs (7) and forced fumbles (2)….Navarro plays its final regular-season road game Saturday at Kilgore, where the 11th-ranked Rangers will be celebrating their Hall of Fame Day.  Honorees will be former football players Charles Champine (1977-78) and Rob Tobeck (1989-90), basketball players Gerald Paddio (1984-85) and Francisco Elson (1995-97), Rangerettes founder Gussie Nell Davis and broadcaster Manny Almanza.
