NC places 7 on all-region soccer, led by MVP Blackwood

Seven members of coach Alicia Wilson’s Bulldog soccer team were named in some capacity to the All-Region XIV team released Friday.

Sophomore forward Deneisha Blackwood was selected by league coaches as MVP after a 22-goal, 13-assist season while leading the Bulldogs to the Region XIV finals.

Blackwood, a two-time NJCAA Player of the Week honoree, led Region XIV in points (57) and shots (87) and tied for second in assists.  She had 5 game-winning goals and two 5-goal games during the season.

Shantell Thompson, a midfielder who broke NC’s single-season assist record, also was named to the first team. She led the league (21) and finished fifth nationally in that category.  Thompson finished the season with 49 points and 59 shots to rank third in Region XIV.  She had 7 two-assist games, including 5 in a row.

Freshman Melissa Hamilton earned first-team honors as a defender.

Other honorable mention awards went to sophomores Alliyah Nolan, Victoria Swift, Karina Martinez and freshman goalkeeper Rebeca Cuellar.

Nolan led Region XIV goal scoring (23) and finished second behind Blackwood in points (50) and shots (67).  Nolan had a 5-goal game during non-conference play and also had a hat trick in a league win at Jacksonville.

Cuellar was 10-4 with a 1.08 goals-against average as the Bulldogs logged 10 shutouts.
