Bulldogs double over CBC, 81-73, for 1st Region XIV win

By MIKE MONTFORT  —

Double-doubles by Eric McCullom and D’Angelo Hunter led six Navarro players in double-figure scoring and the Bulldogs cleared a team-high 57 rebounds Saturday in their 81-73 Region XIV basketball win over the Coastal Bend Cougars.

Coach Michael Landers’ Bulldogs (8-3 / 1-1) claimed their first conference win in their final fall-semester contest at home, and remained unbeaten after six at the Wolens Special Events Center.

The double-doubles bring to six the number recorded by Navarro basketball in 11 games to date. Saturday’s game was the first in which two NC players turned in double-doubles in the same contest.

McCullom equaled his personal-season-best Saturday with a 14-point, 15-rebound game.  McCullom’s point total featured 8-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line.  Nine of his rebounds were of the offensive variety.

Hunter managed a 10-point, 11-rebound contest, despite a 2-for-16 shooting struggle from the floor. Unfazed, Hunter managed eight defensive boards and three assists in the Navarro win.

Freshman Emmanuel Egbuta, making his first start, led Bulldog scoring with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor and seven rebounds.

Sophomore Saint Hilaire tallied 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in his second game back from injury.

Navarro, which played only 9 deep, also got 11 points apiece from sophomore starter Calvin Anderson and freshman Randall Broddie.

The Bulldogs led 36-23 at halftime.

Coastal Bend (5-3/0-2) lost its third straight game, in spite of pulling within four points on two occasions during the second half.  Willie Rooks led the Cougars with 28, and Taywyn Mason added 13.
