Coaches Association Poll places NC baseball at No. 10

By MIKE MONTFORT    —

The folks at Collegiate Baseball Newspaper made a list and checked it twice.  And sure enough, just before Christmas, their little stocking stuffer appeared on December 22.

Neatly tucked into the sock: the 2017 NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association Division I Preseason Poll.  Just enough of a little surprise during the winter break to make us anticipate the return of spring more — the season opener February 3, the conference opener March 2, the Region XIV Tournament May 12, and, hopefully, a week of JUCO Grand Junction-style beginning May 27.

Slow the pace of the paper dreams, already.

The first of the preseason polls list coach Matt Podjensky’s Navarro Bulldogs at No. 10 — one of three Texas teams to be ranked in the Top 10 and five in the Top 20.  It’s nice to be recognized, but a lot will happen between December 22 and the first weekend in June. Within that timeframe, we’re gonna find out who’s been naughty and who’s been nice, as well as those who have been ignored.

One of six qualifiers from last year’s JUCO World Series is ranked as the preseason No. 1 — Yavapai Community College of Prescott, Az.  Following the four-time NJCAA champion Roughriders in the preseason listing in order are Chattahoochee Valley, Al., at No. 2; Iowa Western, at No. 3; San Jacinto, at No. 4; and Santa Fe CC, Fl., at No. 5.  Another 2016 JUCO qualifier, Delgado CC, La., is ranked No. 14.

Other Texas teams from Region V rated include Grayson, at No. 7; Howard, at No. 15; and Midland, at No. 19.

Navarro is scheduled to play home-and-away, non-conference single games against San Jacinto and Grayson this spring.
