Region XIV Roundup Jan. 19: NC needs win at Panola

By MIKE MONTFORT   —

CARTHAGE — Navarro basketball attempts to right its ship here Saturday when it plays its next Region XIV East Zone game against the Panola Ponies at Arthur Johnson Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs, coming off an 83-65 loss at home Wednesday to Paris, have lost of five of their last six games and are desperately searching for remedies to redirect a downturn.   NC (10-8/3-5) currently is mired in a fifth-place tie with Bossier Parish, four games behind zone-leader Tyler and can’t afford to surrender more ground.

NC has struggled since Region XIV play started on November 30.  In its first 10 games, the Bulldogs averaged almost 93 points per game with victory margins slightly more than 13 points.  In their last eight contests, the Bulldogs have been averaging 70 points.

The third-place Ponies (12-6/4-3), coached by second-year head coach Grant McMillan, have won six of their last nine games and are coming off an open date.  They’ll be rested and ready Saturday in a gymnasium where they own an 18-13 record against the ‘Dogs since 1986-87.  Panola, in fact, defeated Navarro eight straight seasons and 10 of 11 between 1998 and 2009 in Carthage.

In Wednesday’s loss to Paris, the Bulldogs managed only 13 field goals and got point production from six players.  Sophomore guard Saint Hilaire turned in a personal and single-season high 22 points, while Javier Roper came off the bench to provide 13.

Paris led the entire game.  NC probably was fortunate to trail 35-27 at halftime after hitting only two baskets during the first 11 minutes.  Three minutes into the second half, three-pointers by Abrian Edwards and Tereke Eckwood pushed the Dragons into a 45-32 lead.  Shortly afterward within a four-minute span, PJC went on an unanswered run of 13 points that swelled the lead to as many as 25 points.

In Wednesday’s other Region XIV games, it was TVCC 101, Bossier Parish 74; Tyler 75, Kilgore 69 in overtime; San Jacinto 95, Lee 75; Lamar State-Port Arthur 77, Angelina 59; Jacksonville 98, Coastal Bend 89; and, in a non-conference game, Blinn defeated Lone Star-Tomball, 96-64.

At 4 pm Saturday, in addition to the Navarro-Panola game, Region XIV matchups include TVCC at Paris, Tyler at Bossier Parish, San Jacinto-Central at Blinn, and Lamar State-Port Arthur at Jacksonville.  Coastal Bend will play Lee at Baytown in a 6 pm contest.
