Navarro softball’s scheduled 1 pm Monday non-conference doubleheader here against Grayson College has been cancelled, according to athletic director Roark Montgomery.
Softball is returning from a 4-2 weekend at the Region XIV Crossover Tournament in Beaumont, but now will take some time this week to heal and rest for the Friday March 3 conference-opening doubleheader at Bossier Parish against the Cavaliers.
Grayson (19-4) and its nationally ranked offense were due to play a return doubleheader here Monday against coach Jessica Karenke-Burke’s Bulldogs. The teams split a February 8 doubleheader at Denison — Navarro winning an eight-inning opener, 12-11, and Grayson taking an 11-3 five-inning nightcap.
The Vikings, sparked by Marcella McKinney and Jaycee Grimm, lead the NJCAA in home runs (43), runs-batted-in (232), runs scored (247), hits (264), doubles (60), and they are tied for first in bases-on-balls (114). According to NJCAA statistics Sunday, GC also has the No. 2 club nationally in slugging percentage (.735) and on-base percentage (.525).
McKinney (13) and Grimm (10) rank 1-2 nationally in home runs; they are first and fourth in runs-batted-in.
Grayson saw a 14-game winning streak snapped Saturday by Carl Albert State College in the second game of a doubleheader at Rattan, Ok., 6-4.
Navarro enters zone play Friday with a 14-12 mark, thanks to rugged non-conference schedule that’s included 10 games against the likes of 2016 national champion Butler and Region V powers Howard, Weatherford, McLennan and Grayson.
At Beaumont Athletic Park during the crossover weekend, Navarro bounced back from a 4-0 opening-loss to Galveston to defeat Lamar State-Port Arthur (4-3), Laredo (3-1), San Jacinto-South (6-0) and Coastal Bend (7-5).
