PARIS — Rightfielder Josh Ragan slugged his first three home runs of the season in his first three at-bats Thursday and drove in a personal single-game-high six runs as the Bulldogs defeated Paris, 9-5.
Ragan hit a two-out solo home run in the first, a one-out solo shot in third and poked a grand slam during the fourth inning as Navarro (23-17-1/ 16-6) maintained its East Zone leadership as the weekend series shifts to Perry D. Graham Field in Corsicana for a 1 pm Saturday doubleheader.
Catcher Braden Williams, who had walked three times, added a solo homer — his 3rd of the year — to start a two-run ninth inning off righthanded reliever Dawson Seabourn.
Starter and winner Gary Watkins worked five innings, scattered seven hits, allowed three earned runs and struck out eight. Following Watkins to the mound were Eric Sandoz, Mark Geisel and Asher Cook. Together, the bullpen trio worked four innings of three-hit baseball, allowing two unearned runs while fanning five.
Navarro availed itself of 10 walks from three Dragon pitchers.
The Bulldogs scored in each of the first four innings and chased starter Garrett Walker after 56 pitches in two-and-two-thirds of work. Seabourn manned long relief for PJC, throwing 112 pitches in 5.2 innings, but surrendered seven bases-on-balls.
Paris got its first three runs via home runs. Designated hitter Connor Anderson slugged a one-out, two-run home run (No. 7) in the first and first baseman Thomas Jeffries belted a third-inning leadoff shot.
Jeffries, the Dragons’ clean-up batter, hit for the cycle and collected 10 total bases in a 4;for-5 day at the plate Thursday. He singled in the first, homered in the third, grounded out to shortstop in the 5th, doubled in the seventh and tripled in the bottom of the ninth.
Jeffries scored Paris’ final run with a two-out triple and came home during Sam Haley’s game-ending at bat on a 1-2 passed ball.
