NC soccer gets 2nd-half goals, smothers Butler, 2-0

TYLER — Tenth-ranked Navarro recorded its second 2-0 shutout of a Top 10 ranked team within a week Friday as second-half goals by Andrea Rabanales and Wasila Diwura sparked the Bulldogs to their win over No. 7 Butler.

Coach Alicia Wilson’s unbeaten Bulldogs (3-0) pressured and attacked the Grizzlies and goalkeeper Elena Garcia with 27 shots and dominated play in the Butler’s end of the pitch.  Navarro freshman goalkeeper Maitane Bravo (3-0) posted her second shut out, successfully fending only 4 shots.

The game was scoreless until the 72nd minute when Rabanales used assists from Lorraine Canavan and Diwura and kicked the ball into the right side of the net.

Navarro added an insurance goal during the 87th minute as Diwura used a Laura Duran assist and put the ball over Garcia’s head into the net.

With the shutout, Bravo and the Bulldogs broke Butler’s 28-game scoring streak.  The Grizzlies had not been shut out since the 2015 NJCAA Tournament semifinals when they lost to eventual champion Iowa Central, 2-0.

Navarro plays at 2 pm Tuesday in Cisco against the 1-1 Lady Wranglers at Chesley Field.

NC’s home season opener is scheduled against the Lady Wranglers at 4 pm Friday, Sept. 8.
