COLORADO SPRINGS, Col. — Navarro sophomore middle blocker Carolina Barbosa not only became the school’s first All-American volleyball player, but also a first-team All-American selection Thursday by the NJCAA.
The Brazilian led first-year coach Ronda Shirley’s Region XIV Tournament Semifinalist Bulldogs to a 27-12 record — the most wins in a single season by the program in more than 10 years — and NJCAA national ranking for eight consecutive weeks. Statistically, Barbosa ranked nationally in sets and matches played, as well as finishing seventh in points (541) and eighth in kills (459).
For her work in the team’s success, Barbosa became the first NC player to achieve All-American honors since the program’s inception.
The award follows up her selection as the Region XIV North Zone Player of the Year from a four-team division that sent league rivals Tyler and Panola to the NJCAA Tournament.
