BRENHAM -- James Jean-Marie turned in his fourth double-double of the year, scoring 23 points and clearing 12 rebounds as the Bulldogs (10-1 / 2-0) won their eighth straight game -- an 85-78 decision over the Blinn Buccaneers at The Kruse Center. Five players hit in double figures for NC, which shot 58% from the floor as a team (30-of-52). Trey Pulliam sank 15 points and dished out a team-high eight assists as Navarro snapped Blinn's nine-game winning streak and handed the Buccaneers their first loss of the season. Shakem Johnson totaled 14 points from 6-of-8 shooting. Gavin Kensmil contributed 11 points from 5-of-7 shooting, with five rebounds and three assists. Xavier Davenport also pitched in 10 points for the Bulldogs. Navarro led at halftime, 45-30, but Blinn closed within four points during the second half. AJ Rainey led Blinn with 18 points and Kai Tease added 14. By MIKE MONTFORT  /  (Keith Speer photos)  --- James Jean-Marie recorded his third double-double of the season, scoring 24 points and grabbing 13 rebounds while leading Navarro (9-1/1-0) to a 90-71 Region XIV opening victory Wednesday over the Lee Rebels. Coach Michael Landers' Bulldogs shot 48 percent from the floor and only committed six turnovers as they extended their winning streak to seven games. NC defeated Lee for a third consecutive meeting, and 5th in the last six. The Bulldogs secured their eighth straight win over the Rebels at The Wolens Special Events Center. Jean-Marie hit 8-of-14 shots from the floor, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. Of his 13 rebounds, 10 were defensive. The 6-7 sophomore transfer now has scored 20-plus points in six of his last eight games, and posted his fourth consecutive team-high rebounding game. Over the last four games, he's averaged 12 boards. Sophomore Shakem Johnson added 20 points from 10-of-16 shooting and cleared nine rebounds in the effort . By MIKE MONTFORT Welcome to the grind of Region XIV basketball. The conference season starts tonight.  Season two. Navarro basketball is less than one month into the regular season. Call it nine playing dates.  The Bulldogs have been through one holiday period that's fast approaching the speed bump of semester exams before a breakaway stretch.  Through all the stops, starts, studies, stresses, returns and restarts, Region XIV conference's long season now is making its call. League play begins here at 7 pm Wednesday when the Lee Rebels (6-3) challenge coach Michael Landers' Bulldogs (8-1) on Lewis Orr Court at The Wolens Special Events Center.  Both teams bring six-game winning streaks as play begins for keeps and continues into March. Samples are small, but trends appear promising for the Bulldogs, which currently rank fourth in scoring (111.7 per game), fourth in field-goal-shooting percentage (56.6%), sixth in assists (24.3 per game) and 10th in steals (12.8 per game), according to NJCAA statistics Monday night. By MIKE MONTFORT Navarro Basketball, preparing for the 2018-19 season, will be participating in a pair of October scrimmage events. Coach Michael Landers' Bulldogs will be in the 66-team field of the 19th Mullen/Mitchell Dallas JC Blowout October 5.  Navarro will scrimmage Northern Oklahoma College-Enid at 2 pm, Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa at 4 pm and Region V member Odessa at 6 pm.  The Wranglers are coached by Kris Baumann, a former head coach at Trinity Valley Community College. NC also will participate in the 12-team Chic-Fil-A/FCA Scrimmage on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Betty Jo Crumm Graber Activity Center at Weatherford College against two more region V opponents.  The Bulldogs face the host Weatherford Coyotes at 3:15 pm and square off against coach Billy Clyde Gillispie's Ranger Rangers at 6 pm.  Gillispie returns to coaching at Ranger after kidney transplant surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis, Mn., last April. Sandwiched between those scrimmage dates will be The 21st Annual Region XIV Conference Media Tipoff at 10 am Tuesday, Oct. 16, at TVCC in Athens.
