Cheer Another Grand Show!
Navarro’s 3-peat Grand National Championship
caps 6th straight JC Division title and 11th overall
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Six is sweet.
And the Navarro College Cheerleaders are celebrating the number six in a big way this weekend — they earned their sixth straight national cheer championship and 11th overall Friday at the NCA-NDA National Championships.
And to add icing to that celebration cake, the Bulldogs also claimed their unprecedented third Grand National Championship — outscoring all other colleges in the competition, both large and small. Navarro Cheer is the only team to claim the Grand National Award since it’s been given.
The Bulldog squad finished first after Thursday’s preliminary round, and kept their lead in the championship competition Friday afternoon, earning a score of 98.50 to easily outdistance the four other colleges in the division.
For Coach Monica Aldama, who has brought back 11 national titles to Corsicana since 2000, Friday’s win was as special as any of them.
“I am so proud of my team’s performance today,” Aldama said following Friday’s win. “They had great energy and did everything I asked of them. They ended up scoring an incredibly high score of 98.5.”
Navarro’s 98.5 score on Day 2 in Finals was the highest score awarded any team from any division Friday.
Taking second place in Friday finals after performances and point deductions was neighboring Trinity Valley Community College (94.68), which was also in second place after Thursday’s preliminaries. Third place went to Mt. San Antonio College (88.63) of Walnut, Calif.; fourth was Iowa Central Community College (85.15) of Fort Dodge, Iowa; fifth went to Weatherford College (84.08).
And the Bulldogs aren’t finished just yet….
Brittany Hughes and Kailan Jones will represent Navarro College at 10:11 am CDT Saturday in a new partner stunt team performing category at The Band Shell.
NAVARRO CHEER WINS PRELIMINARY ROUND
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Looking to make it six national titles in a row, the Navarro College Bulldog Cheerleaders are in first place after preliminary competition at the National Cheer Association’s National Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.
“We are really excited to be in first place after the preliminary competition,” said Monica Aldama, coach of the cheerleaders. “We had a couple of bobbles today, and we have the ability to perform even better tomorrow.”
The Bulldogs squad scored 97.90 points to take the top spot in the Junior College Division after the preliminary round. Second place went to Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, with a score of 95.60. They were followed by Weatherford College in third place with 90.18; Mt. San Antonio College of Walnut, Ca. with 87.48; and Iowa Central Community College of Fort Dodge, which scored 81.00.
The finals of the Junior College Division will be held Friday at the venue in Daytona Beach.
Friday’s championship round has two goals — to win not only the Junior College Division, but for the third straight year capture the overall championship of the competition, including the large schools.
“We have a very high score today even with it not being our best performances, so we are excited to see what tomorrow brings,” Aldama said.
This year, Navarro College also has a partner stunt team competing in a separate division. They’ll perform on Saturday.
