Incoming Student Trainer Requirements
- Must have interest in pursuing athletic training as a career.
- Experience is not a must, however it really helps. Students with experience will have a better chance of getting into the program when competing with those without. Still, this should not discourage any inexperienced student trainers from applying.
- You must have a good work ethic and dedicate yourself to athletic training and sports medicine. Student trainers are expected to be at work every day, on time. There are very few extenuating circumstances that merit absence from a day of work in the training room. You must be prepared to work as many as five to six hours a day during the week and limitless hours on game days. This is a full time job that you must be serious about. Athletic training is not a club or extracurricular organization that you attend when you have time.
- While on the athletic training staff, you must carry a 2.25 GPA to be eligible for any financial aid and or travel with any sport. If your grades aren't good enough, then you cannot be missing classes to go on the road with our teams.
- You must be prepared to work whatever sport we want you to. These decisions are based on need, work ethic, and personal fit with a specific sport for our students. Having said that, most trainers will ultimately begin with football and branch out from there.
All student athletic trainers receive a student trainer handbook that they must read and sign before beginning work in the program. It maps out all specific duties and requirements of individual student trainers while being a part of the program at Navarro College. Failure to comply with specific policies can result in suspension and dismissal from the program. However, these guidelines are explained specifically and in depth after admission to the program.
Formal application process starts with printing the application that is on the web site. Print it out, fill it out, and return it to Navarro College Sports Medicine, attention Sierra Holcomb, Head Athletic Trainer. With the application, we also need two letters of recommendation from anyone who can identify your character as well as your work ethic. These can be mailed separately or with the application. You can link to Navarro College home page and download any specific school information that you need, or, Chris will submit your name to our school relations office and get you on their mailing list. Also, feel free to contact Sierra Holcomb at (903) 875-7470, or e-mail her at Sierra.Holcomb@navarrocollege.edu if you have any questions whatsoever.
