CORSICANA, TEXAS, NOV. 1, 2017 — At Navarro College, leaders at the Cook Education Center are working to inspire all students – but especially high school students at risk of dropping out of school – to pursue STEM education courses and get excited about science and space.
The Center’s Planetarium – a large circular theater with a domed screen and seating for 200 – is one innovative tool in their arsenal. The space-aged theater is primarily used as a learning laboratory for Navarro College’s astronomy courses but is also an educational field trip destination for area schools.
Today, Texas State Rep. Byron Cook and AT&T announced a $10,000 contribution to the Navarro College Foundation to support the Planetarium’s astronomical and science outreach program that will expose 150 at-risk high school students to various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers.
“The Planetarium is a great tool for students at Navarro College, but also for those at area schools,” Cook said. “I’m very pleased that AT&T today is supporting the efforts of the Navarro College Foundation to reach out and engage local students – especially those at risk – to expose them to the wonders of the universe and pique their interest in science and other STEM-related fields.”
AT&T is committed to education with local contributions – like the one today to the Navarro College Foundation – as well as other initiatives in Texas and across the country through AT&T Aspire, the company’s signature education initiative focused on school success and career readiness. With an unwavering commitment to data-driven education outcomes, AT&T Aspire has impacted more than 1 million students since its launch in 2008.
“Through Aspire, our signature education initiative, and other local initiatives like the one today, AT&T is investing in students – at home, in the classroom and at work – to prepare them for success tomorrow,” said Debbie Keel, Regional Director with AT&T. “We are very pleased to support the Navarro College Foundation and the Planetarium’s astronomical and science outreach program to help our local students, especially those who may be at risk of dropping out of school. We hope to excite students about the possibilities for them here in Corsicana and beyond.”[divider]
