Corsicana — Three students at Navarro College have been named recipients of the Larry Weaver Memorial Scholarship. Nancy Miranda, Tyler Casbeer, and Amber Walker were among this year’s recipients of the memorial award.
The scholarship was established in memory of the late Dr. Larry Weaver. At the time of his death in November 2012, Dr. Weaver was serving as dean of arts, sciences, and humanities and also as director of the Navarro College honors program. Several years ago, the faculty and staff at Navarro College set up a scholarship, which they funded with monthly payroll deductions. When Dr. Weaver passed away, the donors decided to attach his name to the scholarship and honor his memory.
He came to Corsicana to start the Air Force ROTC at Corsicana High School, later moving over to work at Navarro College as an instructor before moving into administration at the college.
A graduate of the Air Force Academy in 1977, Weaver was a rescue helicopter pilot for the Air Force until retiring as a major in 1994. He and his wife, Susan, moved to Corsicana in 1995.
“Because Dr. Weaver was highly respected by his colleagues and by the students, this is an appropriate way to honor his memory,” said Dr. Tommy Stringer, director of the Navarro College Foundation, which administers the scholarship.
Those wishing to donate to the scholarship may contact Dr. Stringer at 903-875-7380.
