Corsicana — Pactiv, LLC has partnered with Navarro College to provide job training using a $680,192 Skills Development Fund grant from the Texas Workforce Commission.

TWC Commissioner Ronny Congleton presented a check to Navarro College District President Barbara Kavalier and representatives from the college and Pactiv Wednesday in a ceremony held in the college’s Cook Center.

The grant will be used to custom train 245 new workers in lift truck operations, hydraulic systems, AC/DC motor theory and maintenance, and pneumatics. Those trained will include engineers, supervisors, quality technicians, mechanics, material handlers and lift truck operators. Upon completion of training, the workers will earn an average hourly wage of $14.78, according to information provided by the TWC.

“What we do well is we train folks for the workforce,” Kavalier said at the presentation. “With this grant we’ll be training over 200 employees.”

State Rep. Byron Cook (R-Corsicana) delivered remarks via a video presentation, praising the TWC and local industry in partnering for the creation of new jobs.

“Today, we are one step closer to having many more good paying jobs right here in Corsicana,” Cook said. “We’re fortunate to have Navarro College here in our community to provide the skills necessary for these jobs.”

Congleton was pleased to be sharing good economic news with the grant announcement.

“The last few years I’ve spent way too much time with unemployment and loss of jobs, so I’m always thrilled to be anywhere where job creation is taking place,” he said.

Congleton said “nothing is more important in our country right now” than job creation.

“We clearly have a lot of work to do,” Congleton said. “This grant is part of that work.”

Congleton added the Skills Development Fund grant was a high-quality program, and said Navarro College “brings tremendous credibility to the project.

“I’m confident the that the workers, the employees and the community will all come out ahead.”
