Systems Administrator
General Description:
Under the general supervision of the Director of the Computer Center, supports the hardware and software for the various College computer systems.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
• Maintain and manage computer operating systems.
• Install and maintain server-based software applications.
• Monitor and adjust system performance for usage and efficiency.
• Keep up-to-date with vendor patches and perform system upgrades outside of College operating hours.
• Provide technical support to departments using Datatel Colleague and WebAdvisor.
• Provide technical support for custom systems including WebAdvisor, Blackboard, Electronic Transcripts and FACTS interface; assists with the implementation of new interfaces to College databases.
• Maintain database/systems security, including electronic archives and backups.
• Establish and document procedures for automated and manual system management tasks; prepares user and technical documentation for the implementation, support and operation of new and/or modified systems.
• Perform daily maintenance on system usage logs, error logs, and reports.
• Perform emergency support services during evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary to support the 24x7 information needs of students, faculty and staff.
• Provide additional support to other College systems including, but not limited to: Blackboard Transaction, Blackboard Learning, email, DNS, web, Tivoli Storage Management, Horizon and Adobe Connect.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent from a college or technical school with course work in computer science/information systems and three (3) to five (5) years of related experience preferred - professional certifications in related areas may be considered.
• Three (3) to five (5) years experience with the Datatel Colleague application preferred.
• Three (3) to five (5) years experience with the Unix operating system required; IBM’s AIX and/or RedHat Linux preferred.
• One (3) to three (5) years experience with Oracle and/or Unidata database required; MySQL experience preferred.
• One (1) to two (2) years experience with Windows Server operating systems preferred.
• Must have the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Must have strong organizational skills with the ability to develop effective work methods and meet short deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
• Experience with Datatel Colleague, preferably on an AIX platform.
• Experience installing patches, creating end-user security levels, monitoring and tuning database/system performance.
• Experience with the AIX operating system.
• Experience installing software, creating file systems, creating users.
• Experience installing microcode.
• Strong programming skills to include the following:
• ability to write SQL and SQL-like queries against databases
• ability to write Unix shell scripts
• ability to quickly learn programming languages as necessary to generate reports from various database packages.
• Knowledge of TCP/IP, Ethernet, and router software and hardware.
• Ability to quickly diagnose system hardware, software, or operator problems and to recommend corrective action.
• Demonstrated interest and ability in staying current with computer technology, including hardware, software, operating systems and the Internet.
• Possess a current valid driver’s license and proof of current automobile insurance.
• Good keyboarding skills with the ability to type at least 40 wpm.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively, clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with various levels of the college community, including the ability to exercise patience, tact and good judgment in dealing with end users.
Working Conditions:
• Variances from regular working hours may be necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
• Busy working environment with numerous interruptions.
Salary: $45,000-$55,000.00 – 12 month assignment; Rank: Paraprofessional; Exempt
