Gaston Taylor Gooch served Navarro College in a number of capacities from the school's founding in 1946 until his death in 1965. Mr. Gooch began his career as a teacher and principal in Texas Public Schools, serving from 1932-1943 in Dawson and at Corsicana Junior High School from 1943-1946. When the Navarro Junior College district was formed in 1946, Navarro College President Ray Waller asked Gooch to serve the new College as its first Registrar. In 1947 Gooch was named Dean-Registrar and served in that position until 1963 when he was named Vice-President and Dean, posts he held until his death in 1965. His dedication to Navarro College was recognized by the Board of Trustees in 1967 when they named the new library the "Gaston T. Gooch Library."

Verda Gooch served Navarro College first as secretary to the President in 1946 and eventually as its business manager until her retirement in 1971. Her service to the College was honored in the 1980s by the Board of Trustees naming the courtyard in front of the College Library in her honor. Today, the Verda Gooch Courtyard serves as a popular gathering place for students, visitors, and campus events.
