The Robert S. Reading Arrowhead and Indian Artifact collection consists of approximately 48,000 artifacts mounted in 502 cases and is one of the finest collections of Native American artifacts in the Southwest. The collection, a gift from the Robert S. Reading family, is located on the second floor of the Gaston T. Gooch Library and Learning Resource Center.

Interested in Indian artifacts for more than 30 years, Mr. Reading started the collection in the 1930s while residing in El Paso, Texas. Joined by his family, he collected in Texas, New Mexico and Mexico items that were representative of the Stone Age of the Indian culture. The oldest artifacts in the collection have been dated to 8000 B.C. Many types of stone items used by the Indians are evident: arrow points, grinding tools, sinker stones, beads and other ornaments, knives, scrapers, and spear points.

The public is invited to visit the Reading Indian Artifact Collection during the LRC's hours of operation. Guided tours for individuals and groups are available upon request, and there is never a charge for admission.
