The buzz of electricity generated by early voting for personal favorites culminated in an evening with excitement tingling the air at the Cook Education Center Saturday, Feb. 13 as the Navarro College Foundation presented a new kind of fundraiser to the community — Dancing for Our Stars.

Seven couples from the Corsicana area have been preparing their ballroom dance routines over the past several months in hopes of winning the coveted Navarro College Mirror Ball Trophy.

H.M. and Carole Davenport began the competition with a beautiful waltz; Michael and Trisha Stewart danced the Cha -cha to the Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back”; Gary Douglas and Dr. Frank Means made their appearance as Bertha Bumiller and Arles Struvie, respectively, of Greater Tuna dancing the “Tuna Tango”; and Cliff Patterson and Betina Hawkins danced a beautiful progressive two-step. Jimmy and Dustie Hale performed their rendition of the Cha-cha and Rumba; Dr. Matt and Cathy Branch performed a lively Fox trot with a swing influence resulting in perfect 10’s across the board; and Brad Cook and Joanna Fritz performed a flawless Rumba.

The sold-out event was packed with fun, laughter, and a lot of dancing for the attendees to enjoy. The college had record attendance with over 325 event attendees and over 190 unique hits to the live streaming website. Total revenue far exceeded what the college had anticipated and was generated from event sponsors as well as votes for the couples competing both at the event and online. The judges scores accounted for 50 percent of the final scores while the audience votes counted for the other 50 percent.

“We had three main goals with this fundraising event, including putting on an event that would be fun for all in attendance, involving the community as a whole, and raising money for the students of Navarro College,” stated Dr. Bruce Tabor, executive director of the Navarro College Foundation and vice president of operations and advancement at Navarro College. “I am so happy to report that we fulfilled all three goals with the event Saturday night. This was done with the support of so many, including the community members, dancers, judges, dance instructors, and sponsors but especially with the help of all of the volunteer staff and students who gave of their time and efforts to make the event possible.”

The competition was very close but ultimately a winner had to be selected. Dr. Matt and Cathy Branch were announced as the 2016 Winners of the Dancing for Our Stars competition. They proudly accepted the Mirror Ball trophy from Navarro College District President, Dr. Barbara Kavalier, and Navarro College Foundation President, John Gantt. Jimmy and Dustie Hale were announced as the 2016 Runner Up dancing couple.
