Navarro College Foundation’s annual fundraiser was held on Saturday, Feb. 11 at The Cook Education Center, and it was the second year for Dancing For Our Stars.

Six couples from the Corsicana area have been preparing their ballroom dance routines over the past several months in hopes of winning the coveted Navarro College Mirror Ball Trophy. Carey and Melissa Dean started the evening with a fun swing dance to You’re the Boss; Jordan and Shelley Golden danced a salsa/cha cha to Pitbull’s Fireball receiving perfect 10’s from the judges; and Roy and Malinda Veldman performed a Tango to Hernando’s Hideaway. David and Nicole Arnett danced a sultry Lyrical to Thinking Out Loud; Mark and Tracey Jordan delighted the crowd with their Fox Trot to Oh What a Night/Uptown Funk and received not only perfect 10’s, but a standing ovation; and Justin and Jenni Wright performed a Swing/Jitterbug to Jerry Lee Lewis’s Great Balls of Fire complete with dyed hair, piano, lighting the piano on fire and receiving 10’s as well.

The sold-out event was packed with fun, laughter, and a lot of dancing for the attendees to enjoy. The college had record attendance with over 400 event attendees and over 1,200 unique hits to the live streaming website. Total revenue nearing $129,000 far exceeded what the college had anticipated and was generated from event sponsors as well as votes for the couples competing both at the event and online. The judges scores accounted for 50 percent of the final scores while the audience votes counted for the other 50 percent.

“The Dancing for Our Stars event was spectacular and extremely well-supported by the community,” said Harold Housley, Executive Director of the Navarro College Foundation. “The Dancers performed individualized dance routines to an enthusiastic record crowd. Proceeds from the event provide needed scholarships for deserving students on the Corsicana campus. In addition, a portion of the 2017 proceeds will fund a competitive Teaching Innovation Award program whereby Corsicana faculty can use the money to improve classroom instruction. The entire event was fun, exciting and very successful.”

The competition was very close but ultimately a winner had to be selected. Mark and Tracey Jordan were announced as the 2017 Runner Up dancing couple. And, Justin and Jenni Wright were announced as the 2017 Winners of the Dancing for Our Stars competition. They proudly accepted the Mirror Ball trophy from the 2016 winners Dr. Matthew and Cathy Branch.
