Tyler Apache Ladies softball earned the No. 2 ranking in last Wednesday’s first NJCAA Division I poll.
Coach Nicole Dickson’s squad, winners of 34 of 35 games played to date, certainly did nothing to dissuade voters in a doubleheader sweep of 10th-ranked Angelina last Saturday.
On Wednesday, the highly regarded TJC team invades Jesse and Lou Cummings Field for a 1 pm Region XIV East Zone doubleheader battle with second-place Navarro. The Bulldogs, coached by Jessica Karenke and Courtney Anderson, bring a 19-9 record overall and 5-1 zone mark into action — their first since a doubleheader split with Angelina at Lufkin on Wednesday, March 16.
Defending East Zone champion Navarro has won five of its last six outings and has a 6-1 record in home games this season. The Bulldogs are hitting .343 through 28 games.
TJC’s won 18 consecutive games since an 11-6 February loss at home to Weatherford. The Apache Ladies are hitting .400 through 35 games with 43 home runs. Amber Landry (8-46 / .400) and Jazlyn Crowder (8-43/.457) join Karli Herron (7-32/.417) as the power punch. Tanna Huie (5-33/.534) is the team’s batting average leader.
The Apache Ladies likely will start pitchers Abby Walker and Cassady Ferrill.
