Softball begins bounceback week with Northeast, Kilgore

Bulldog softball will try to regain some lost footing in the Region XIV East Zone race and pick up some ground this week in a pair of 1 pm doubleheaders.

Coach Jessica Karenke’s Bulldogs (20-12/6-4) play Wednesday at Northeast in Mount Pleasant and return home Saturday to face Kilgore. NC looks to break out of a rough patch that resulted in losses in four of their last five games, and drop from second to fourth place in the East Zone.

Navarro still has nine zone doubleheaders remaining on its schedule, but five of those twinbills will be on the road.

In their last Good Friday doubleheader at Cummings Field, the Bulldogs split with Trinity Valley, winning Game 1 by a 5-1 count before dropping a 5-2 decision in the nightcap.

Friday, Game 2: TVCC 5, Navarro 2

The Cardinals scored three runs in the top of the seventh to gain a split against the Bulldogs.

Pinch-hitter Samantha Sevier’s two-out single to leftfield produced the tie-breaking run, and Angelica Navarro’s two-run triple added insurance off NC reliever Casey Peters.

NC scored the game’s first run in the top of the second as Alissa Chavez singled home Kenzie McGallion after a leadoff single.

TVCC tied it in the third off NC starter Stephanie Buenrostro when Haley Durden singled for the second of her four hits, and scored on Breana Florez’ one-out double.

NC regained the lead in the bottom of the third on a bases-loaded balk on a 2-2 pitch to McGallion by pitcher Courtney Johnson that allowed Jaclyn Kresta to score.

The Cardinals knotted it at 2 in the top of the fifth as Torri Hedrick’s two-out single to rightfield plated Durden.

Friday Game 1: Navarro 5, TVCC 1

The Bulldogs got a two-out, two-run home run from third baseman Catherine Alvarado in the bottom of the first inning and never relinquished their lead.

NC added to its 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second as Jade Strother doubled and scored on a Chavez single.

In a two-run fourth, Chavez doubled and came across on Nicole Matise’s single to leftfield. Matise then scored on centerfielder Anika Barbosa’s two-out single.

The first-game win snapped a three-game Navarro losing streak.
