Softball smashes Northeast in road doubleheader

MOUNT PLEASANT — Bulldog softball took two Region XIV East Zone games Tuesday from Northeast, recording wins of 10-3 and 8-0.

The nightcap was shortened to five innings by the run-rule.

Navarro improved its season mark to 22-12 and its league mark to 8-4 with the sweep.

Game 2: Navarro, 8-0

Designated player Kenzie McGallion homered, and Gabby Martinez and Catherine Alvarado each knocked in two runs to back Stephanie Buenrostro’s one-hit shutout.

Navarro scored six runs in the fourth and two in the fifth, using five doubles to spur a nine-hit attack.

Martinez, the team’s leadoff hitter, doubled twice.  Alvarado and shortstop Alissa Chavez also produced run-scoring two-baggers in the Bulldogs’ victory.

Buenrostro (8-6) faced 20 hitters during the abbreviated contest. She walked three and struck out two.

McGallion slugged her third home run of the season.

While Worthington blasted her team-leading seventh home run of the season, four other Bulldogs had two hits apiece — rightfielder Mia Martinez, centerfielder Anika Barbosa, shortstop Jaclyn Kresta and Alvarado.

Martinez doubled, tripled, scored three runs and knocked in a run.

Barbosa singled twice, stole two bases and scored three runs.

Winning starter Katelyn Cooper (9-2) scattered six hits, walked four and surrendered two earned runs in during her five-inning stint.
