NC, Tyler fighting for survival at 10 am Friday

HOUSTON — East Zone foes Navarro and Tyler find themselves fighting for their lives Friday when they clash in a 10 am elimination-bracket game at the Region XIV Softball Tournament.

Navarro (32-19) and a 53-3 Tyler team that was ranked No. 1 or No. 2 nationally most of the season will battle it out to stay alive at San Jacinto-South’s Lady Coyote Field.

Thursday’s openers were full of surprises.

  • Blinn rallied from 4-0 and 5-2 deficits and broke Navarro’s heart, 8-7, by scoring two runs on Jordin Wilkins’ double aided by a throwing error with one out in the bottom of the seventh;
  • Angelina slugged three homers — two by single-season school recordholder Taylor Davis — in a 9-1 run-ruled win over the Lamar State-Port Arthur Seahawks; and
  • Top-seeded East and South Zone champions bowed to No.4 seeds during the afternoon games.  San Jacinto shocked Tyler 6-2, and Paris followed up with a 1-0 triumph over Galveston in the 5:30 pm contest.
Navarro suffered a miserable first-round loss and saw its three-game winning streak end despite home runs by first baseman Kenzie McGallion (6) and designated hitter Jade Strother (2).
McGallion accounted for NC’s first run off Blinn starter Sam Junkins.  The Bulldogs sent eight batters to the plate in the third to score three runs, thanks to McGallion’s single and a double by Alissa Chavez.
Blinn shaved the 4-0 lead in half with a two-out rally in the third as leadoff hitter Nicole Garcia singled and Meghan Wrinkle slammed a two-run homer off starting pitcher Stephanie Buenrostro.
Strother belted a two-out solo homer to leftfield and gave NC a 5-2 advantage in the fifth.

Blinn got back into the game again when Courtney White started off the bottom of the fifth with a single and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Kalli Edwards.  Katie Andrie delivered the big blow in the inning with a three-run homer to left to give the Buccaneers a 6-5 lead after five.

That lead didn’t hold long as Navarro scored a pair of runs on an error to take a 7-6 lead. With one out, Wilkins’ two-base throwing error on Miranda Worthington’s grounder enabled two runners to score and regain a Bulldog lead.

Wrinkle reached on a one-out error in the Bucs’ last at-bat, and Andrie singled to get on base. That is when Wilkins powered a double to the gap in left-center to score Wrinkle easily and then Andrie scored on a throwing error to steal the win.
